WHEN SHOULD I GO?

We went in April during Easter holidays, when the temperature was a warm 38 deg. C. Going later could mean a lot more rain, but it is also supposed to be more beautiful, and also less touristy. Going during the Laotian new year (beginning of April) is in the peak season and would require plenty of advance booking and may be more expensive, but may be fun to see the country celebrate one of its most important festivals.

HOW DO I GET THERE AND GET AROUND?

There are apparently many ways to get to Laos. Flying into Vientiane or Luang Prabang, taking a boat along the Mekong, or travelling over land are the popular options. For us, the lack of a direct connection between HK and Laos meant that we had to travel via Bangkok.

The city (or rather town!) of LP itself is so small and compact that it can easily be traversed on foot, which seems to be a popular option for most tourists. Many also rent a bicycle, or motorbike. For doing the sights outside LP, hire a boat for the day and enjoy the fresh breeze on he Mekong, or hire a motorbike, although the latter may be more uncomfortable due to the heat, dust and bumpy roads. Tuk-tuks are also available in the city and to go to the caves.

Within LP, the lack of proper maps/multiple road names and spellings can make for confusion in trying to find places. The town is however so small that it is not difficult to figure out your way just by walking around. Any road you take will lead up to the main road called Royal Sakkarine Road.
